ON THE MOMENT’s SPUR

Creative Writing is often unplanned, arriving without warning. I lose many an idea for want of a pen, a piece of paper, a jotting. I promise myself that I will not forget the gem. But when, even within the hour, I write by recall, that unplanned idea, motive or first line is lost. The spontaneity has gone. Creative Writing without spontaneity is lifeless, contrived, and worked at. The labour-intensive effort is evident. Confronted by the endless examples that bombard us, I discard nine out of every ten.

In our 24/7 Age, an Age, an Era like no other, we lament the luxury of having time to do anything.

The attached gallery allows me to wander around during the lunch break. I like my eBooks, whether on a bespoke tablet or my iPhone. But I spend a great deal of time reading print.

I’m not sure I read my books with that very formal posture we see some younger women adopt. That is a throwback to a bygone age, and artificial intelligence hasn’t worked out 21st-century posture or lack thereof. I do, however, recall being taught to read and to sit up straight.

Posture is important, and I’m thankful that my military background and horse-riding in former days enable me to stand formally at gatherings and chat informally, perhaps with a glass, mug or saucer-and-teacup in hand.

Today’s Gallery has seven themes:

1 Gentility in Women 1900 - 1950
2 A Scribe in London in the 16th Century (during the reign of Henvy VIII)
3 A Scribe in London in the 18th Century (during the reign of George III)
4 Mystery and Imagination
5 Why do they hide this from us? Why are we forbidden to read this? (21st Century, as Democracy and Freedom, worldwide, are under increasing pressure from Autocracy and Dictatorship)
6 Study in the 21st Century
7 Women in Berlin 1933

Ken Webb is a writer and proofreader. His website, kennwebb.com, showcases his work as a writer, blogger and podcaster, resting on his successive careers as a police officer, progressing to a junior lawyer in succession and trusts as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, a retired officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and latterly, for three years, the owner and editor of two lifestyle magazines in Liverpool.

He also just handed over a successful two year chairmanship in Gloucestershire with Cheltenham Regency Probus.

Pandemic aside, he spends his time equally between his city, Liverpool, and the county of his birth, Gloucestershire.

In this fast-paced present age, proof-reading is essential. And this skill also occasionally leads to copy-editing writers’ manuscripts for submission to publishers and also student and post graduate dissertations.
