raison d'être

These Podcasts cover thirteen years, and many recordings are of pieces written circa 2004.

They were my means of communicating with followers globally. Whether I am reading a Dispatch or recounting, through prose or poetry, a conversation I’ve had with friends in Syria and elsewhere, they form an integral part of the collective work on this website.

I joined the police force in 1970, qualified as a junior lawyer in 1989, my military service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve bridging both professions, receiving the Queen’s Commission in April 1974 and retiring after three commands in 1991.

During my 12 very enjoyable years in Liverpool, I established my base as a writer, and enjoyed running a monthly - and, at times, challenging - book club … Liverpool people keep us all on our toes! … and for a year, participated in a weekly radio debate on the Liverpool Hope University campus.

Broadcasts do not cease relevance.

We cherish all media when it is no longer holding centre stage, for it bridges our present to our past, a reminder of very active and productive lives. The broadcasts become richer, and more meaningful, a glimpse into a world that, even in 12 years, has long since trailed behind.

So these tracks I am leaving here without further editing are part of the 115 podcasts I recorded from the Liverpool Waterfront.
